Menu Categories

Categories group your menu items — for example, Starters, Mains, Desserts, Beverages. Create categories before adding items.

In short: Categories group your menu items (e.g. Starters, Mains, Desserts). Create them inline from the Category field when adding or editing an item — type a new name to create it, or pick an existing one from the dropdown.

Create a category

Categories can be created inline when you add or edit a menu item. In the item form, the Category field accepts free text — type a new category name to create it, or select an existing one from the dropdown.

  1. Open the Menu tab

In Restaurant Admin, click the Menu tab.

  2. Click "+ Add item"

Open the item form. You'll find the Category field here.

  3. Type a new category name

In the Category field, type the name of a new category (e.g. "Starters"). The new category is created when you save the item.

  4. Save the item

Click Save. The category is created and the item is placed under it on the public menu.

Best practice

  • Keep category names short and clear — one or two words work best: Starters, Mains, Desserts, Beverages, Kids Menu.
  • Use Title Case (capitalize the first letter of each word) for consistency: "Mains" not "mains", "Hot Drinks" not "hot drinks".
  • Create categories in the order you want them to appear on the menu, since they currently display in creation order.

Reordering

Categories currently appear on the public menu in the order they were created. The first category you create will appear at the top, and subsequent categories appear below it. Manual reordering will be available in a future update.

Items without a category appear under an Uncategorized section on the public menu. To keep your menu tidy, always assign a category when adding items.
